Another Vietnam Painting

11/2/2012

Yesterday after finishing the Tararua painting I started an outline drawing for another Vietnam painting. Still in Hoi An, a painting of an old man sculling his sampan up the river.
I decided to do the background in a much looser style this time, just blocking in the  colours and avoiding too much detail. The main focus will be the sampan and sculler, which will be quite precise. The idea is that it will stand out from the background, just like the subject in a photograph where the depth of field has been limited to a narrow band.

Progress so far as follows:
Picture
Background blocked in using pastel sticks on their side. Sketch drawing of the foreground.
Picture
Main subject starting to appear. The yellow on the boat ties in with the buildings in the background.
