Tararua Sunrise

Another painting finished today - "Tararua Sunrise".

The Tararua Range runs between the west coastal plains and the Wairarapa Valley in the lower North Island of NZ. So from the coastal side the sun rises behind the mountains, giving interesting colours and patterns of light and shade. This is what I have tried to capture in this painting.
The process consisted of drawing the outline, blocking in the sky, then working down the mountains maintaining the aerial perspective by keeping the background hills lighter and bluer, then getting darker and less blue as the hills move forward.

The painting uses a mix of Winsor & Newton, Rembrandt and Schminke pastels on Art Spectrum Colourfix pre primed acid free pastel paper.
